Bad Sneakers

One tumblr under a groove - a 1970s retrospective.

So in a shameless bit of plugging, I’m involved with a theatre group who are performing one of the ultimate 70s musicals, A Chorus Line, next year. I designed the poster, and I will be ‘advising’ on costume. So, better, restart this blog, then!

My hallway, yesterday… (genuine 1970s leather armchair, reproduction trimphone, just on the edge of shot a crocheted tote bag from the 1960s or 1970s featuring owls and other bird life).

I found this wonderfully kitsch tea towel while on a day trip to York. If I can bear to part with it, it’s going to be a souvenir for the boyfriend. Hopefully.
[Clickthrough to the Flickr account that had a great shot of it]

P.S. Courtesy of the comments section, link to a slightly fascinating Vintage Screened Tea Towels group on Flickr. I am in awe that such a thing exists!

Today’s charity shop LP finds: Black Explosion, 1974, Ronco
I suspect that the benefactor of my local Barnardos’ vinyl section was a sucker for TV infomercials in the 70s, given the presence of both this and Super Bad (see below) on the same shelf. They also might be responsible for the Isley Brothers’ glut down there as well. Anyway, possibly due to the exploit-tastic title, this LP doesn’t seem to have been re-released (do Ronco even still exist?) but there are a few funky and cheesy gems on this 24 track platter.
SIDE ONE:
Love’s Theme Love Unlimited Orchestra
Armed and Extremely Dangerous First Choice
Soft Soul Boogie Woogie Wilson Pickett
Landslide Tony Clarke
A Walkin’ Miracle Limmie & Family Cookin’
Gonna Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse Jimmy Helms
Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time) The Delfonics
I’ve Got to Use My Imagination Gladys Knight and The Pips
A Mother For My Children The Whispers
Sing a Rainboow/Love is Blue The Dells
I’m Doing Fine Now New York City
Dance To The Music Sly & The Family Stone
SIDE TWO:
Honey Please, Can’t Ya See Barry White
Tell Me What You Want Jimmy Riffin
Love Train The O’Jays
Theme from Shaft Isaac Hayes
I’m Stone In Love With You The Stylistics
There Are More Questions Than Answers Johnny Nash
La La Peace Song O.C. Smith
Brown Baby Billy Paul
Everybody Plays the Fool The Main Ingredient
The Love I Lost Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes
(Blame It) On the Pony Express Johnny Johnson & The Bandwagon
Soulville Aretha Franklin
